Chalk-it-up Obstacle course

This DIY obstacle course is beyond simple and will be sure to get your children active and engaged in fun, play based learning. All you need is some chalk and pavement and away you go!

This play based activity not only helps to develop gross motor skills, but also encourages fine motor skills with them drawing the course, creativity when they create the course; it encourages multi step instruction, literacy and numeracy concepts as well as develops social skills through interaction with other players. It’s a pretty all rounded learning activity, so let’s get started!

This activity is best suited to an area that is paved and has amble space to move, jump, run and generally be active.

  1. To begin take a look at your paved area and chose a place to start your obstacle course. Now using your chalk and write the word “Start”. This will obviously be your starting point of your obstacle course and starting position for the players.
  2. Now, again with the chalk, begin to draw your first obstacle station. The sky is the absolute limit here, but here are some suggestions.

Twisty path: Draw a long, twisted line to walk along and follow.

Circle jump: Draw a few circles, one after another to jump inside of. Players will have to jump from circle to circle to get to the next section.

Star jump: Draw a giant star and place a number inside (e.g. 5) this will be a star jump station- players will need to do 5 star jumps before moving on.

Heel-to-toe: draw one straight line. Players will need to balance and use heel-to-toe action from one end of the line to the other.

Number-hoop: draw some circles and add numbers inside. Players will have to hop to each number.

Twirl: Draw a big spiral- this will be a twirling station. Add a number to indicate how many times the player needs to twirl.

Stomp and roar: Draw some triangles diagonally to each other- players will be asked to stomp on the triangles and roar.

The sprint: Draw two parallel long lines. Players will use this as a running lane and sprint to the other side.

  1. Once you have drawn your obstacle, you might like to add some words to explain each station. For example: “Star jumps x5”.
  2. Now continue to draw your next obstacle. Again, be as creative as you like, but just remember to think about making it achievable. Continue this step until you are satisfied with all your obstacle stations. You can draw as many or as few as you like.
  3. Once you have all your stations drawn up, add a finish line so the players know when to stop. You are ready to play!
