My tiny human LOVES fine motor activities and is colour orientated at the moment, so when I came across this activity, I figured it would be a winner, and I was right! She had an awesome time posting and pulling out the sticks numerous times and naturally sorted them in the correct hole by colour! She always has ways to surprise me.
A simple, easy, low prep game to assist with colour recognition and fine motor development. All you need is an egg carton, coloured paddle pop sticks and markers and you have yourself a homemade DIY learning experience to engage those busy hands and curious minds in a play-based way.
What you will need
- Egg carton
- Coloured paddle pop sticks
- Coloured markers
- Scissors
Activity steps
Setup
- Turn your egg carton upside down. Using your markers colour in each section a different colour. Make sure that the colours reflect the colours of your paddle pop sticks. If you don’t have coloured sticks, colour them in!
- Using your scissors, carefully punch a small slit in the middle of each coloured section. The slit should approximately be the same width as the end of a paddle pop stick.
- Gather your paddle pop sticks, making sure there is a matching colour for each section on the egg carton and you’re done.
Learning Opportunities
- Colour recognition- Your child will be encouraged to identify different colours, correctly label and match them to the corresponding hole.
- Fine motor- your child will use their fine motor development to manipulate the paddle pop sticks and push them into the slits of the egg carton.
