Colour matching with pegs

Colour matching with pegs is an easy to make game that will encourage your child to engage with fine motor skills, colour recognition and develop concentration skills all in one. Made quickly with minimal resources and everyday household items, it’s a simple activity that will engage your child and foster their learning and development.

Setup

  1. Using your ruler and marker divide your plate into even sections. I choose to do divide mine into quarters. But you can do as many sections as you like.
  2. Using your coloured markers, colour each section of the plate a different colour. I coloured mine the same colour as my pegs to keep things simple.
  3. Now using a black pen or marker add the word for each colour in its appropriate section. This step is optional;, however I always like to add literacy components to activities where I can, it’s never too early to start!
  4. Next, gather a small amount of coloured pegs. If you only have wooden pegs you could colour the top side with matching colours. I had coloured pegs already.
  5. Now, set the coloured paper plate and pegs out for your child. Encourage your child to select a peg and clip it to the same colour section on the plate. For little ones, this could be a tricky task and they might need support.
  6. Continue to match the coloured pegs to the coloured plate.
