DIY race track and mudpit

Does your child love the outdoors? Do they love cars or things with wheels? If you answered yes to either of these, then this is a must for your backyard! It is simple to create and provides hours of play for your little ones; not to mention the opportunities to upcycle things from around the house. It’s a no brainer- get started now!

This outdoor mudpit and car track will nurture your child’s imagination. Imaginative play is crucial for children’s emotional wellbeing, helping them to understand the world in which the live and their relationships with in it.

This experience is also a sensory based, open -ended experience that uses loose parts, meaning children are able to explore, play, investigate, problem-solve and represent their thinking using a range of materials in endless ways. It is a messier activity, however, just remember that mud will wash off, but memories will last for a lifetime.

Set up

  1. Find an appropriate area to start building and creating. A nice flat surface in a sun safe location is ideal.
  2. Check your tyre for insects and clean it thoroughly, before filling the tyre with your dirt using your shovel. Try to fill the tyre to the top and pack it down so that no unwanted insects make residence in open or gapping areas.
  3. Now for the palings, these will become your tracks. If upcycling, make sure they are sanded-back and smooth so little fingers don’t get splinters. I purchased mine from Bunnings already pre-sanded.
  4. Now tear small pieces of gaffer tape (2-3 inch) off the roll and place in a straight line running down the middle of each paling. Don’t forget to leave a gap between each piece of tape to make the effect of a road.
  5. Set your play area up to make it look inviting and add your cars, trucks and play vehicles. Now you’re ready to play!
