Nature scavenger hunt

Get your kids outside and get in touch with nature with this super simple nature scavenger hunt.

Children are naturally curious – this experience will build upon a sense of wonder and encourage children to explore, observe, and problem solve in an interactive and playful approach.

Exploring nature offers a wide range of learning opportunities as children make discoveries they will notice different colours, shapes, textures and sizes. The scavenger hunt printout, offers a pre-literacy element to the experience all whilst encouraging healthy physical activity.

There are lots of printables available on the world wide web, but my favourite is one by stayathomemum.com.au (check out the reference link below).

  1. Access the link below, download and print out your free scavenger hunt sheet.
  2. Attach your sheet to a clipboard or something similar to lean on, grab a marker or pencil and your ready to roll.
  3. Head to an outdoor space- your local park or even your backyard. Use your list and start hunting for the items noted.
  4. Tick each item as you find them, until all have been found.

During the experience

  • Ask your child what they notice about this item? You could prompt with colours, shape, size. Do you notice any similarities or differences?
  • Allow your child to have a hands-on approach (where safe of course), to physically pick up and explore the objects.
  • Use the opportunity to talk about the item and introduce new ideas, thoughts or concepts. E.g. Do you know what flowers need to grow?

There are endless learning opportunities. Take time to chat to your child and enjoy the time together. See where you end up and let us know how you went in the comment section below. Have fun!

Variations

  • Perhaps you would like to collect some nature items along the way and create a collage with them at a later time.
  • Maybe you’d like to try a photo scavenger hunt – taking photos of all the beautiful things you find.
  • Maybe you’d like to bring along extra paper and draw the things you find.
  • For older children they might like to create their own scavenger hunt list
  • There are so many free scavenger hunts out there – have a search on the internet and find one that suits you and your family!
