Peg-a-name

Similar to our peg-a-number game, here we have a peg-a-NAME game! A very simple, personalised activity that encourages children to identify the letters in their name, match and spell their name using pegs. Great for pre literacy learning, fine motor development and for increasing a child’s focus and concentration.

Set up

When I originally created this game I was in a creative mood and went all out. However, I have since reflected and found an easier way to create this game. Below are the directions for both. You can choose which way you prefer to create yours. Option A, is a lot more simple and quicker to set up- I would recommend this way.

Option A:
  1. Using an A4 piece of paper, fold your page in quarters horizontally. Cut along each line. You should have 4 long strips.
  2. Now write your child’s name clearly along one of the strips and laminate (optional).
  3. Now write the letters of your child’s name on the pegs. One letter per peg.
  4. You’re ready to play!
Option B:
  1. Using publisher or a word document, create a document that has a bunch of squares on it and type out your child’s name. One letter per square. Use a font that is clear. I generally use ‘foundation script’ which reflects the same font our local primary school uses.
  2. Print this document out twice, one for your name card and one set for the pegs.
  3. Cut out each of the squares. Glue one set to a piece of coloured paper to create your name card. I created my card and ordered the letters vertically- however if I was to do this again I would create the card horizontally so the child is reading correctly from left to right.
  4. Laminate your name card and the remaining squares and cut them out. Optional, but recommended for durability.
  5. Use a hot glue gun to glue the remaining letters to the pegs. One letter per peg.
  6. You’re ready to play!
How to play
  1. Set your name cards and pegs on a playing surface. A small table or rug space is ideal.
  2. Now encourage your child to choose a peg with a letter and peg it to the corresponding letter on their name card to spell their name. Encourage your child to label and sound out the letter.
Extension ideas
  1. Instead of using a name card, try using a photo card. Use a photo of the child and encourage them to peg the letters to firm and spell out their name.
  2. Try using upper and lower case letter. Can they recognise and distinguish between the two?
  3. Try this activity with sight words!
